Kirribilli House
The original Victorian terrace house is high above and set back from the street, facing the beautiful harbour and city. Responding to the steep topography, new design elements include a street-level entry, tunnel, and lift lobby cut into the sandstone under the house, with the lift enabling a vertical internal connection to the house high above.
The space between the original house and the street-level entry behind the original sandstone foundations was carved out to provide two additional levels to accommodate the media room, laundry, and a guest bedroom suite.
Respecting the house's heritage, the Victorian terrace was restored, superfluous elements removed, and new contemporary layers added.
The material palette in the original house is light, fresh, and understated. In contrast, the palette is richer and more layered in the new lower levels below the house, recessed into the sandstone base. These include dark-stained timber walls and joinery, linen-wrapped wall panels, and textural timber elements enveloping the guest suite.
Considered restraint with paired-back detailing and a palette of finishes provide calm and neutral spaces to house our client’s contemporary French and Belgian furniture and art collection.
